Cameron Stern's Daylilies
Cameron’s obsession with daylilies started in middle school, and he’s been collecting, growing, and breeding them ever since. His current collection is close to 900 named cultivars, and he produces 1,000-2,000 new seedlings each year. His breeding interests vary, focusing on the unique, but emphasizes garden presence and plant quality. While his current breeding program is a small backyard operation, he’d love to one day expand the scale of his seedling patch and perhaps venture into other ornamental species.

Cameron loves working with ornamental plants — they have great color and form, they have tremendous landscaping and ecological value, and perhaps above all else, they inspire. Plant breeding offers a unique creative outlet and has led Cameron to spend his undergraduate and graduate career studying plant breeding and genetics. He spent a year in New Zealand studying genetic engineering, and will be heading to Australia to study the genetics of flower color in Kangaroo paw (Anigozanthos spp.). Read more about it here:

Cameron writes: "GROOVY UV gets its name from the University of Vermont, where I spent the first couple years of my undergraduate degree. The flower is a diamond-dusted lavender purple with a large green throat that always gives off rather “groovy” vibes — garden visitors can’t seem to help commenting on its color. Beyond its psychedelic palette, GROOVY UV also sports a band that can be highly variable, both in intensity and pattern. This plant originates from colchicine-treated seed, but remained a diploid. While it doesn’t have the highest of bud counts, its color makes it a unique addition to the garden. Pod fertile only, but sets seed readily for me. Lots of potential."
